Workshop
Would you like to get involved in supporting refugees? Are you already involved or are you returning from a volunteer stay at Europe’s (external) borders? Would you like to become more aware of the power dynamics that prevail in support structures? Then our workshop is the right place for you to reflect on paternalism and the ‘help’ narrative in the context of support work with refugees.
In the workshop, we will explore the dynamics of paternalism in social interactions in support and humanitarian work, understand its impact on marginalized communities and promote alternative narratives that do not reinforce dependency but empower people.
Hadis Yakubi (she/her) has personal experience of flight and worked with the feminist collective WISH on Lesvos for 14 months. She gave various lectures among others at the University of Osnabrück and University Berlin to break the silence about the deaths at Europe’s external borders.
Mina Damnjanovic (she/her): feminist activist from Belgrade. In Belgrade she was mostly involved in queer collectives and in the feminist peace collective Women in Black, where she was mostly involved in actions related to sexual violence in war. In Berlin she is working in the kitchen, cleaning and doing workshops of feminist self defence for people who suffered sexual violence. Also, she is studying a Masters degree in Intercultural Conflict Management at Alice Salomon Hochschule.
About the association
Brückenwind e.V. is a non-profit association dedicated to supporting volunteers through raising awareness and reflection. We aim to foster a space where people can discuss and address the power dynamics often present in volunteer work. Our focus includes critical issues like Eurocentrism, White Saviourism, Voluntourism, Paternalism, and Aid Narrative, and how these affect support work, especially with refugees and people on the move. We provide opportunities for exchange and learning through online seminars and interactive workshops, supporting volunteers better understand their motivations and how to improve the impact of their efforts. Our goal is to create more solidarity-focused volunteer structures that meet the real needs of those being supported.
